Deadly Tanker Fire in Batam, Indonesia, Claims 10 Lives

A major incident occurred at a shipyard in Indonesia’s Riau Islands province, resulting in multiple casualties among repair workers.

Incident Summary

A fire broke out on a tanker early on Wednesday, October 15, while the vessel was undergoing repairs at a shipyard in the city of Batam. The city of Batam is located approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Singapore by sea. Authorities confirmed that the vessel was docked and not carrying oil cargo at the time of the blaze.

Casualties and Investigation

The incident tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. Additionally, 18 others were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment, with some sustaining severe injuries. All victims were reported to be workers involved in the repair of the vessel. Local police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

This is the second fatal fire involving the same vessel while it was being repaired in Batam in recent months. A previous fire in June resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to nine others. Following that earlier incident, local police named two individuals as suspects for allegedly violating standard safety procedures.
