- Emissions Pricing Proves Politically Divisive Among Member States.
- IBIA Disappointed as Net Zero Framework Adoption Delayed.
- IMO Working Group to Resume Talks and Draft Implementation Guidelines.
Last week’s MEPC Special Session highlighted the significant political divides among countries regarding the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, particularly in terms of emissions pricing. The absence of a unified stance means that the draft amendments will need to be revised and put on hold for a year, reports IBIA.
IBIA Expected a Different Outcome
The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), along with various international groups, had hoped for a more definitive result. They were backing the adoption of the Net Zero Framework (NZF) and actively working on detailed implementation guidelines. Unfortunately, a majority of IMO Member States weren’t ready to take that step, which has stalled progress toward making shipping the first sector with a global regulatory framework for decarbonization.
Next Steps and Continued Engagement
Next week, a working group meeting at the IMO will aim to prepare implementing guidelines and mend the diplomatic rifts that surfaced during the session. IBIA has reiterated its commitment to supporting the IMO’s initiatives and advocating for the interests of the entire marine energy supply chain.
