Honouring Culinary Ingenuity: Stella Maris Initiative to Celebrate Seafarers’ Cooking

17

A novel campaign has been launched by the global maritime charity Stella Maris to celebrate the creative cooking and ingenuity of seafarers by compiling a unique cookbook of their recipes and personal stories from the sea. The initiative recognizes the challenges of preparing healthy meals on board and seeks to honour the resourcefulness of crews worldwide.

The Seafarers’ Cookbook Initiative

The core of the campaign is the creation of a new seafarers’ cookbook, which will be filled with recipes submitted by crews from around the world. The charity is calling for recipes that provide nourishment and sustenance at sea, encompassing a range of options from breakfasts to quick, energy-giving snacks, and main meals that foster crew camaraderie.

Celebrating Culinary Skill and Resourcefulness

The campaign aims to highlight and celebrate the remarkable skill and ingenuity that seafarers employ to create nourishing and wholesome meals, often working within limitations. As noted by Tim Hill, CEO and National Director of Stella Maris UK, access to a varied diet is frequently difficult due to long stretches away from port, limited supplies, tight budgets, and unpredictable schedules, which can lead to repetitive meals. The finished cookbook will serve as a practical guide to delicious meals that can be easily prepared by any crew at sea.

The Stories Behind the Recipes

A key component of the campaign is the emphasis on the personal stories associated with the food. Stella Maris encourages seafarers to share why a particular recipe is significant to them. These stories might detail family dishes adapted for life on board, meals created from simple store cupboard staples, or dishes that are known to lift the crew’s mood. The goal is to make the book not just a guide to healthy eating, but a celebration of life at sea, honouring the originality and comforting traditions of seafarers’ cooking.
