China’s Minister of Transport, Liu Wei, has called on shipping companies and port operators around the world to join forces in defending free trade and resisting protectionist measures. His remarks come amid growing trade tensions between China and the United States.

Criticism of US Port Fees

Speaking at the North Bund Summit, attended by over 400 delegates from more than 50 countries, Liu criticized recent US actions imposing port fees on Chinese vessels, calling them examples of “unilateralism” and “protectionism.” He warned that such measures could disrupt international supply chains and weaken the global economy.

Defense of China’s Retaliatory Measures

Liu also defended China’s own countermeasures, asserting that they were justified and necessary to safeguard the interests of the Chinese shipping industry. He reiterated that Beijing remains committed to upholding global trade rules while protecting its national interests.

Call for Global Unity in Maritime Trade

Urging collective action, Liu appealed to shipping companies and port operators worldwide to collaborate in promoting a fair, open, and just trading environment. “All companies dealing with shipping businesses should work together to promote a fair, just and open environment and safeguard the common interests of global economic and trade development,” he said.

Liu’s remarks underscore the rising strain in US-China maritime relations and highlight Beijing’s efforts to rally international support for free trade principles. As the world’s largest trading nation, China’s call for unity could resonate strongly across the global shipping community amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty.
