Pilbara Ports has reported a total monthly throughput of 68.5 million tonnes (Mt) in September 2025, marking a 3% increase compared to the same month in 2024. The results highlight the region’s continued strength in handling bulk exports, particularly iron ore, despite shifts in global demand and market conditions.

Port Hedland Maintains Strong Output

The Port of Port Hedland contributed the majority of the volume, recording 49.4 Mt in total throughput. Of this, 48.6 Mt consisted of iron ore exports, representing a 1% year-on-year decrease. Imports reached 214,000 tonnes, which was 5% lower than in September 2024.

This modest decline suggests stable export operations amid fluctuating global steel demand and evolving supply chain trends.

Growth at Ashburton and Stability at Dampier

The Port of Dampier handled 15.1 Mt, maintaining similar export volumes to last year. However, imports dropped to 107,000 tonnes, a 26% decrease from 2024.
Meanwhile, the Port of Ashburton demonstrated remarkable growth, moving 4.1 Mt in September a 179% year-on-year increase reflecting a surge in regional industrial activity and project throughput.

Market Shifts and Operational Factors

According to Pilbara Ports, throughput variations across its facilities reflect changes in market conditions, scheduled maintenance activities, and customer demand. Despite these fluctuations, the ports continue to play a key role in supporting Australia’s resource exports and maintaining efficient maritime logistics in the region.
