One Armed Robbery Incident Reported In Asia ReCAAP ISC Urges Vigilance In Singapore Strait

16

Between 14 and 20 October 2025, one Category 3 incident of armed robbery against ships was reported in Asia, according to the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC).

Incident Details

The incident took place on 16 October onboard a bulk carrier transiting the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Singapore Strait. While the crew was unharmed, some engine spare parts were stolen.

Area of Concern

ReCAAP ISC noted a slight increase in incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS). Ships are advised to maintain enhanced vigilance when transiting these waters, while littoral States are encouraged to intensify patrols and enforcement efforts.

Situation in the Sulu-Celebes Seas

For the fifth consecutive year, no abduction of crew incidents have been reported in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and waters off Eastern Sabah. The last such case occurred on 17 January 2020. As of January 2025, the Philippine Coast Guard downgraded the threat level for abductions in the region to “LOW,” indicating no current signs of impending attacks.

ReCAAP ISC Advisory

Ships transiting the Sulu-Celebes Seas are urged to:

  • Maintain vigilance and contact relevant Operation Centres of the Philippines and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM);

  • Report any incidents immediately to coastal and flag States;

  • Refer to the Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia and ReCAAP ISC’s reporting poster for best practices.

While overall maritime security in Asia remains stable, ReCAAP ISC underscores the importance of proactive reporting, situational awareness, and preventive measures to ensure the continued safety of ships and crew in regional waters.
