Safe Manual Lifting Practices At Sea

24

Manual handling of loads such as lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, or pulling is a routine part of seafaring life. However, improper lifting techniques remain one of the leading causes of injuries on board. Understanding safe manual handling practices is crucial to protect yourself and others from harm, especially when working in the challenging and constantly moving marine environment.

Understanding the Risks

A common mistake among seafarers is lifting a load using the back muscles rather than relying on the stronger leg and arm muscles. This can lead to back strain, muscle injuries, or even long-term physical damage. Onboard conditions, such as rolling or pitching, can further increase these risks. If the vessel is moving heavily, secure the load and postpone the task until conditions improve.

Best Practices for Safe Manual Handling

Always consider mechanical lifting equipment as the preferred option for handling heavy loads. If manual lifting cannot be avoided, evaluate:

  • The weight of the load

  • The distance it must be carried

  • The height of storage (especially if above shoulder level)

  • Any awkward postures such as bending, twisting, or stretching

Key lifting principles:

  • Know your limitations

  • Bend your knees

  • Keep your back straight

  • Carry the load close to your body

Practical Lifting Advice for Seafarers

According to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP), 2025 edition, seafarers should:

  • Use any mechanical aids or lifting equipment provided.

  • Follow company-approved systems of work to ensure safety.

  • Take sensible precautions to assess risks before lifting.

  • Cooperate with health and safety procedures.

  • Inform your line manager of any hazardous handling activities.

Before lifting, always:

  • Plan the lift know where you will place the load.

  • Ask for help if the load is too heavy or awkward.

  • Assess the load for sharp edges, splinters, grease, or difficult grip points.

  • Ensure the deck area is clear, dry, and non-slippery.

  • Check the stowage area to confirm it’s suitable and accessible.

Safe manual lifting requires proper planning, teamwork, and awareness. By following COSWP guidelines and using correct lifting techniques, seafarers can significantly reduce the risk of injury and ensure a safer working environment on board.
