IACS Updates Position Papers On Key Maritime Safety And Sustainability Issues

14

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released updated “Position Papers” addressing a wide range of critical maritime industry topics. These papers outline IACS’s perspectives, ongoing initiatives, and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing safety, sustainability, and technological advancement in global shipping.

Strengthening Safety and Technical Standards

IACS reaffirmed its commitment to improving maritime safety through collaboration and updated regulations. The Association announced new work areas, including Container Ship Safety, in response to rising incidents such as onboard fires, container losses, and structural failures. IACS will work with the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and other stakeholders to enhance the safety framework governing container vessels.

Additionally, IACS continues its focus on Ballast Water Management (BWM) by supporting the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in ensuring consistent global implementation of the BWM Convention. The organization aims to tackle retrofit and engineering challenges while ensuring onboard safety and effective surveys.

Embracing Digitalization, Cybersecurity, and Decarbonization

Recognizing the increasing influence of technology, IACS emphasized the need for robust cyber resilience across the maritime sector. The Association is working to strengthen vessel protection against cyber incidents that could threaten ship safety and environmental integrity.

On digitalization, IACS reaffirmed its role in guiding the industry’s transformation through a safety-oriented approach aligned with international regulatory frameworks.

In support of the IMO’s greenhouse gas reduction goals, IACS pledged to assist in developing detailed technical and operational measures to accelerate decarbonization. It also acknowledged nuclear propulsion as a potential long-term option for zero-emission shipping and committed to ensuring its safe, environmentally responsible integration into maritime operations.

Future-Focused Innovation and Environmental Stewardship

IACS is contributing its technical expertise to advance the regulatory framework for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and to ensure the safe adoption of emerging fuels and technologies in compliance with the IGF Code. The Association also reiterated its position on underwater noise, supporting IMO-led global efforts to mitigate its environmental impact while harmonizing measurement procedures across the industry.

Highlighting the human element as central to maritime safety, IACS stressed the importance of upskilling seafarers and ensuring safe working conditions amid increasing digitalization and automation.

Through its updated Position Papers, IACS reinforces its leadership in maritime safety, sustainability, and innovation. By collaborating with regulators, industry partners, and the IMO, the Association continues to set global technical standards that drive safe operations, environmental protection, and progress toward a more resilient and decarbonized maritime future.
