A groundbreaking partnership has been formed between Keihin Dock, a shipyard subsidiary, and ocean-tech startup Oceanic Constellations, aiming to advance maritime technology in Japan.

Japan’s First Mass-Production USV System

The core of the joint agreement is the establishment of the first mass-production system for small unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in Japan:

  • Partnership Focus: The collaboration will combine Keihin Dock’s shipbuilding expertise with Oceanic Constellations’ digital engineering prowess to create a reliable and scalable production system.
  • Project Name: The initiative is dubbed “Oceanic Constellations.”
  • Technology: The USVs will be equipped with advanced sensors and communication networks to enhance ocean surveillance, facilitate data collection, and improve marine communication capabilities.

Strategic Applications and Group Involvement

The newly developed USVs are intended for use in both maritime and aerospace initiatives:

  • Marine Challenges: The USVs are expected to help address various marine environmental challenges.
  • Space Operations Support: The vehicles will also support the offshore reusable rocket recovery system being developed by the parent Group, which established its Advanced Tech and Space Business Development Team in April 2023.
  • Previous Alignment: This joint agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed in June between the parent Group and the startup, solidifying their strategic work on maritime and space-related projects.
