According to The Star, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has taken another major step in its long-term growth plan by initiating the development of a new berth as part of its expansion strategy. The project, known as Berth Zero, marks a significant milestone in the port’s continued effort to strengthen capacity and enhance operational efficiency.
The contract for Berth Zero has been awarded to a joint venture between MMC Engineering Sdn Bhd and Antara Koh (M) Sdn Bhd. The selection followed a competitive and transparent tender process, emphasizing technical expertise, safety performance, and delivery capability.
The new berth will feature a 360-meter-long quay and will be equipped with four quay cranes to handle container operations. A modern container yard will also be constructed, incorporating electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs) to support efficient and sustainable terminal operations.
PTP stated that the development aligns with its broader goal of boosting the port’s annual handling capacity to around 16 million TEUs within the next two and a half years. This expansion forms part of its strategy to accommodate increasing trade volumes, improve connectivity, and maintain its position as one of the region’s key transshipment hubs.
By adding new infrastructure and advanced handling systems, PTP aims to reinforce its role in global maritime trade and meet the growing demands of shipping lines operating in Southeast Asia. The project also underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing port development and positioning itself as a vital link in the global supply chain.
