The Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile have announced plans to construct a new 1,300-foot (400-meter) container berth at the Port of Mobile. The $131 million project funded through federal appropriations and private investments from APM Terminals will boost berth capacity by 50%, allowing the terminal to accommodate three ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) simultaneously. This marks a significant milestone in expanding the port’s capacity and competitiveness along the US Gulf Coast.
Strengthening the Gulf’s Premier Container Gateway
The new berth forms part of the Port of Mobile’s multi-phase expansion strategy, designed to enhance its status as one of America’s most resilient and efficient container gateways. It follows the recent completion of a $366 million project that deepened the Mobile Harbor to 50 feet, making it the deepest container port on the Gulf Coast.
Additional projects worth over $200 million are also in progress, including a 33-acre container yard expansion, rail capacity upgrades, and a new flyover bridge providing direct on-dock rail access. Construction on the new berth is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed within 24 months. Upon completion, APM Terminals Mobile’s total berth capacity will reach 1.4 million TEU, supported by seven ship-to-shore cranes.
Long-Term Public-Private Partnership Strengthened
To support this expansion, APM Terminals and the Alabama Port Authority have extended their partnership with a 20-year concession renewal, extending operations through 2058 with two additional 10-year options. Increased lease payments from APM Terminals will further underwrite the Port Authority’s investment.
Once completed, the new berth will significantly enhance operational flexibility, reduce vessel wait times, and improve schedule reliability for carriers and shippers across the US Southeast. Strategically located adjacent to 25 acres of potential future development space, this investment strengthens Mobile’s value proposition as a faster, more efficient alternative to congested coastal gateways reinforcing a decade of shared progress in supply chain resilience and economic growth.
