DNV and UC Berkeley Unite to Advance Safe AI Integration in Maritime and Robotics Sectors

23

DNV reports the launch of a new strategic research collaboration with CITRIS at UC Berkeley, focused on developing frameworks for the safe and responsible deployment of embodied artificial-intelligence (AI) systems in physical environments.

Under the agreement, DNV will fund key research initiatives and place a dedicated researcher at the Oakland campus starting November 2025. The partnership aims to extend beyond maritime autonomy into the realms of robotics and autonomous aerial systems, addressing performance under stress, uncertainty and unexpected conditions.

“The future of shipping technology will increasingly rely on intelligent systems navigating complex environments,” commented DNV’s Group Director of Research and Development. CITRIS’s director added that the collaboration blends DNV’s safety-assurance heritage with the institute’s innovation in emerging technology sectors.

For those involved in asset integrity, maritime operations and logistics planning, the tie-up signals that AI-enabled systems — from autonomous vessels to drone logistics — will face rigorous safety and verification expectations.
