ICS Welcomes U.S.–China Agreement To Suspend Port Fees, Calls For Continued Cooperation

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has welcomed reports of an agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to suspend the Section 301 port fees on maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding industries. The development marks a positive step toward easing trade tensions that have impacted global shipping operations.

Suspension of Port Fees a Positive Move for Global Shipping

According to reports, the United States has agreed to suspend the Section 301 port fees on China’s maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors for one year. In a reciprocal gesture, China will suspend its countermeasures targeting U.S.-linked ships. ICS considers this mutual decision an encouraging development that can help stabilize the shipping sector and reduce operational disruptions that have affected the movement of global trade since the imposition of these fees in October 2025.

Support for Strengthening U.S. Shipbuilding Capacity

ICS reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at enhancing U.S. shipbuilding capabilities, noting that increased commercial tonnage strengthens the overall efficiency and competitiveness of the global maritime sector. However, the organization highlighted that recent tariff measures had caused significant challenges for international shipping, increasing costs and uncertainty across supply chains.

ICS emphasized that free and efficient maritime trade is essential for global economic stability. The Chamber remains committed to collaborating with governments, regulatory bodies, and international partners to prevent disruptions to global trade flows. As the world’s leading shipping organization, ICS continues to advocate for dialogue and balanced trade policies that ensure the smooth operation of maritime commerce worldwide.
