The ship squat effect, also known as the shallow water effect, is a hydrodynamic phenomenon in which a ship “sinks” deeper in the water as it moves through shallow water. This is caused by the increased velocity of water flowing under the hull, which creates a low-pressure zone according to Bernoulli’s principle, causing the vessel to sink to compensate.
