Cyprus Shipping Chamber Endorses Unified Path Toward Global Decarbonisation

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) has reaffirmed its support for collective global efforts to establish a unified decarbonisation mechanism under the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The move follows the IMO’s recent decision to postpone discussions on the Net Zero Framework (NZF) for one year, a pause the CSC views as a constructive opportunity to strengthen cooperation and refine strategies toward shipping’s 2050 zero-emissions goal.

According to the Chamber, the NZF will play a pivotal role in defining measures that guide the maritime industry’s transition to zero emissions, providing certainty for shipowners and alternative fuel producers to pursue critical investments. The additional time before the next extraordinary MEPC session, set for next year, is expected to foster deeper consensus among member states on the framework’s structure and content.

While acknowledging that the delay prolongs decision-making, the CSC highlighted its potential value in allowing the international shipping community to conduct further analysis, encourage collaboration, and develop realistic pathways for a balanced and effective decarbonisation transition.

The Chamber reiterated its firm stance that adopting the NZF is a decisive step toward a global regulatory framework. It emphasised that a unified approach under IMO leadership is essential to prevent market fragmentation and avoid regional or unilateral measures that could increase costs, create competitive imbalances, and heighten regulatory uncertainty.

Cyprus’ shipping sector, long a key contributor to national economic and social development, continues to advocate for a coherent and internationally harmonised system that ensures sustainable growth and competitiveness.

Reaffirming its long-standing commitment, the CSC concluded that it will persist in promoting collaboration, consistency, and responsible action — principles that have guided its mission for over 36 years — as the industry advances toward a sustainable and competitive maritime future.
