IBIA And INTERCARGO Forge Partnership To Strengthen Collaboration On Fuel Safety And Decarbonisation

18

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) have signed a reciprocal membership agreement to enhance cooperation between the marine fuels and dry bulk shipping sectors. The agreement highlights both organisations’ shared goal of promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable maritime operations, with a strong focus on fuel quality, safety, and the global transition to cleaner energy sources.

Strengthening Ties for Sustainable Operations

The new partnership formalises an already close working relationship between IBIA and INTERCARGO. Through reciprocal membership, both associations will gain access to each other’s activities, expertise, and working groups. This exchange will help them collaborate more effectively in international regulatory forums such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The initiative also aims to improve coordination on key issues including bunkering standards, decarbonisation pathways, and fuel safety protocols supporting the maritime industry’s efforts toward sustainability and operational excellence.

Promoting Dialogue Across the Fuel Supply Chain

The collaboration will create stronger dialogue between shipowners, bunker suppliers, and other stakeholders across the fuel supply chain. By sharing best practices and technical knowledge, the two associations aim to promote the safe use of current fuels and support the adoption of low- and zero-carbon alternatives.

Alexander Prokopakis, Executive Director of IBIA, emphasised the importance of working together during the energy transition, while INTERCARGO’s Technical Committee Chairman, Dimitris Monioudis, noted that the partnership will help dry bulk operators make informed, safe, and practical decisions about future fuels and technologies.

Through this agreement, IBIA and INTERCARGO reaffirm their mutual commitment to collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation in support of a safer and more sustainable shipping industry. The partnership represents a significant step forward in uniting shipowners and fuel suppliers to tackle the evolving challenges of decarbonisation and marine fuel management.
