The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported a security incident approximately 332 nautical miles east of Mogadishu, Somalia. The event underscores ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the region, where recent reports have indicated an uptick in suspicious activity.

Details of the Incident

According to the report, four unauthorized individuals attempted to board a vessel from a small craft that had launched from a mothership about 5 nautical miles east of the location. The crew promptly challenged the intruders, prompting the small craft to retreat. After warning shots were fired, the small craft described as having a grey and white hull returned to the mothership. All crew members remained unharmed, and the vessel continued safely on its voyage. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident.

Rising Regional Security Concerns

This latest event follows a recent UKMTO advisory warning of suspicious maritime activity south of Eyl, Somalia, where local authorities had intercepted two dhows displaying unusual behavior. The pattern highlights the need for continued vigilance among ships transiting the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.

Maritime operators in the area are advised to maintain a high level of alertness, implement robust security protocols, and immediately report any suspicious activity to UKMTO. The swift response of the vessel’s crew in this case prevented escalation and ensured the safety of all personnel onboard.
