The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) took centre stage at India Maritime Week 2025, reinforcing its position as a key technical enabler within the maritime ecosystem. Through strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and approvals of cutting-edge technology, the organisation underscored its commitment to shipping-technology integration, maritime safety and sustainable operations.
At the event, IRS signed a landmark agreement with a domestic energy specialist to explore the application of nuclear-energy propulsion and power solutions for maritime applications — marking a bold move in future-proofing shipping operations through advanced power-generation alternatives. In parallel, IRS entered a collaboration with a global software and simulation firm to launch a digitalisation initiative, “Next-Gen Seavolution”, which will harness simulation, data analytics and life-cycle management tools to enrich ship-design, construction and operational performance.
In a further signal of intention, IRS granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for a green-tug design developed by a Singapore-based technology company, advancing cleaner-port and harbour operations in line with regulatory and environmental imperatives. The organisation also provided technical sanction to two maritime-technology firms: one a propulsion-system torque-measurement solution and the other an engine-condition-monitoring system — both aimed at improving reliability, performance assessment and predictive maintenance.
As part of its wider agenda, IRS emphasised workforce development and human-capital capability by participating in a panel on maritime human capital. The discussion focused on integrating emerging technologies, skills development and training within the ship-management and seafaring community.
By aligning innovation, digitalisation and sustainable-technology deployment, IRS is reinforcing its role in advancing Indian maritime-industry standards, enhancing shipping safety, supporting ship-building and expanding technical collaboration. The persistent focus on partnerships and approvals highlights how regulatory-class societies can accelerate trade, technology adoption and global competitiveness in the shipping-and-logistics domain.
