Swed-Est Green Collaboration A Step Towards Fossil-Free Maritime Future

The Port of Tallinn and Ports of Stockholm have joined hands to launch the Swed-Est Green Collaboration, a joint effort aimed at promoting sustainable and fossil fuel–free maritime activities between Estonia and Sweden. This agreement, signed on 4 November in Tallinn, marks a major step toward a greener future for shipping on the Tallinn–Stockholm and Paldiski–Kapellskär routes.

Aim of the Collaboration

The main goal of the Swed-Est Green Collaboration is to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport and develop sustainable solutions for both passengers and cargo operators. According to Valdo Kalm, CEO of the Port of Tallinn, this initiative gives both ports a strategic advantage by attracting eco-conscious shipowners and creating opportunities for innovation. The project also focuses on exploring new business models in fossil fuel–free shipping and applying for EU and international funding for green maritime research.

Shared Responsibility for the Baltic Sea

Magdalena Bosson, CEO of Ports of Stockholm, emphasized the shared duty of both countries to protect the Baltic Sea. By cooperating, Estonia and Sweden aim to speed up the green transition in the region, making maritime transport cleaner and more efficient. The collaboration also plans to invite private and public organizations, research institutions, and maritime stakeholders to join the initiative, ensuring a broader and more impactful partnership.

The Swed-Est Green Collaboration represents a significant milestone in eco-friendly maritime development. By combining resources and shared vision, the Port of Tallinn and Ports of Stockholm are not only promoting sustainability but also strengthening economic and environmental ties between the two nations. This partnership sets an example for the entire Baltic Sea region to follow in the global transition toward greener shipping.
