The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has teamed up with RINA, a global engineering consultancy, inspection, and certification firm, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting collaboration in areas like maritime innovation, digitalisation, decarbonisation, and talent development. This agreement was officially signed on November 5, 2025, by Mr Ang Wee Keong, the Chief Executive of MPA, and Mr Carlo Luzzatto, the CEO and General Manager of RINA, reports MPA.
Technology Demonstration Centre to Drive Smart and Green Solutions
The new technology demonstration centre, which will be located in RINA’s Open Innovation Hub in Singapore, is set to be a collaborative space where innovative solutions for maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation can be co-created and tested. The centre will focus on developing smart and remote maritime systems, providing integrated platforms to validate and speed up the implementation of new technologies in real-world scenarios.
Strengthening Research and Technology Partnerships
This partnership will also enhance collaboration with Singapore’s research community, encouraging the adoption of technologies like smart ships, low-carbon marine fuels, battery systems, and digital ports. These initiatives are designed to bolster Singapore’s maritime innovation landscape and assist the industry in transitioning to smarter, more sustainable operations.
Focus on Maritime Workforce Development
As part of this collaboration, RINA will join forces with MPA to support the development of the maritime workforce by engaging in manpower programmes and providing education, training, internship, and scholarship opportunities. These efforts aim to equip the next generation of maritime professionals with the essential skills needed for the digital and low-carbon transition.
Importance of Global Collaboration
Mr Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive, MPA, said: “The MoU with RINA marks an important step in strengthening Singapore’s maritime innovation ecosystem. By working with international partners like RINA, as well as our local industry and research community, we aim to accelerate the testing and adoption of emerging technologies that will make the sector smarter, safer, and more sustainable.”
Mr Carlo Luzzatto, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, RINA, said: “We are honoured to partner with MPA. Scaling innovation and advancing sustainability are key priorities in our growth strategy, and this partnership aligns perfectly with those goals. By embracing an open approach with Singapore’s ecosystem, we aim to create value for its maritime sector and beyond.”
