BAR Technologies Wins 2025 GREEN4SEA-Europort Energy Transition Award For WindWings® Innovation

10

BAR Technologies, a leader in maritime efficiency and wind propulsion, has been honoured with the 2025 GREEN4SEA-Europort Energy Transition Award for its groundbreaking WindWings® technology. The recognition celebrates the company’s contribution to sustainable shipping by providing a commercially proven, emission-reducing solution that supports the global maritime energy transition.

WindWings®: Revolutionising Maritime Decarbonisation

WindWings® is an advanced wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) designed to reduce both fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in ocean-going vessels. Each wing features BAR Tech’s patented three-element design, generating 2.5 times more lift than traditional single-element wings. Unlike other technologies such as flettner rotors or turbo sails, WindWings® requires no continuous power to operate.

With average savings of 1.5 tonnes of fuel per wing per day, the system is among the most powerful and scalable solutions driving maritime decarbonisation today. This innovation highlights BAR Technologies’ commitment to providing practical and performance-driven pathways for reducing emissions.

Recognition and Industry Impact

BAR Technologies stood out among strong competitors including Accelleron, bound4blue, Brunvoll, NatPower Marine, and Oceanly Performance. Accepting the award, Tom James, Sales Director at BAR Technologies, emphasized that WindWings® is not just a concept but an operational reality, already proving its value in real-world applications.
During the panel discussion, James and other award recipients underlined the importance of regulation, collaboration, and transparency to accelerate environmental progress. CEO John Cooper added that WindWings® reflects the company’s core mission to merge world-class engineering with real-world sustainability challenges.

The 2025 GREEN4SEA-Europort Energy Transition Award solidifies BAR Technologies’ position as a global leader in sustainable maritime innovation. Through WindWings®, the company is demonstrating that the energy transition is not a distant goal but an active journey, empowering ship operators with scalable, commercially viable solutions that make a measurable difference in reducing global emissions.
