Suezmax Market Remains Firm as VLCCs Correct from Highs

The VLCC markets again fell back from the higher levels last week, although there seems to be a firming of the markets at the end of the week. 

VLCC

The VLCC market experienced a dip from last week’s highs but showed signs of firming toward the end of the week.

  • Middle East Gulf to China (TD3C): The rate for the 270,000 mt trip dropped about 19 points to WS107, yielding a daily round-trip TCE of $98,773.
  • West Africa/China (TD15): The rate for the 260,000 mt route lost about 13 points to WS106.5, with a corresponding round voyage TCE of $97,502.
  • US Gulf to China (TD22): This market saw a notable decrease of over $430,000, settling at $13,242,222, which translates to a daily round-trip TCE of almost $89,000.

Suezmax

The Suezmax sector remains firm, primarily due to increases in the Western markets.

  • Nigeria/UK Continent (TD20): The rate for the 130,000 mt voyage climbed 12 points to WS159.72, resulting in a daily round-trip TCE of $80,782.
  • Guyana to UK Continent (TD27): The 130,000 mt route gained 10 points to WS152.43, giving a daily round trip TCE of about $76,300.
  • CPC/Augusta (TD6): The rate for the 135,000 mt route moved up 1.5 points to WS161.67, meaning a daily TCE of about $88,200.
  • Middle East Gulf to Mediterranean (TD23): The rate for the 140,000 mt route held steady around WS110.

Aframax

The Aframax market saw a flat trans-Atlantic route but eased for cross-Mediterranean and shorter intra-region business.

  • Cross-UK Continent (TD7): The rate for the 80,000 mt route was flat at WS156, yielding a daily round-trip TCE of just over $65,500.
  • Cross-Mediterranean (TD19): The 80,000 mt route slipped 4 points to WS198, resulting in a daily round trip TCE of just over $62,200.
  • East Coast Mexico/US Gulf (TD26): The shorter intra-region business eased, with the 70,000 mt route losing 16 points to WS223, giving a daily round-trip TCE of a little over $64,600.
  • Covenas/US Gulf (TD9): The 70,000 mt route was reduced by 12 points to WS220, translating to a daily round trip TCE of almost $58,600.
  • US Gulf/UK Continent (TD25): The trans-Atlantic route of 70,000 mt remained flat at WS221, giving a round trip TCE of a little over $62,400 per day.
  • Vancouver Exports (TD28 & TD29): The 80,000 mt Vancouver to China route (TD28) fell back over $185,000 to $3,400,000. Conversely, the Vancouver to Pacific Area Lightering point (TD29) gained 12.5 points to WS237.5.
