BIMCO reports that beginning 1 May 2025, mandatory and voluntary speed-reduction and routing measures to protect whale populations will take effect in regions of Canada, California and Brazil.
The start of May coincides with critical migration and breeding periods for some whale species, prompting the introduction of targeted measures off the coast of California and in Canadian and Brazilian waters.
Key regional highlights:
- California Coast: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has requested a voluntary vessel speed reduction (VSR) to 10 knots from 1 May in specified areas off the California coast.
- Canada and Brazil: Similar frameworks—combining mandatory zones and voluntary guidance—have been activated to reduce the risk of ship strikes during whale peak activity periods.
These protections mark a significant step in mitigating one of the enduring environmental hazards in maritime operations: collisions between large vessels and whales. The measures reflect the maritime industry’s growing engagement with ocean conservation, and the role of shipping operators in safeguarding marine biodiversity while maintaining operational integrity.
