John McDonald Appointed Chairman And CEO Of ABS, Effective January 2026

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has announced that its Board of Directors has elected John McDonald as the next Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The appointment follows a well-planned succession process and will take effect on January 1, 2026, upon the retirement of current Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

John McDonald, who currently serves as ABS President and Chief Operating Officer, expressed his gratitude and vision for the future. He said, “I am honored to lead this remarkable organization. McDonald’s Career and Contributions to ABS

McDonald joined ABS in 1996 as a surveyor and has since held a variety of operational and leadership positions across the world. His career includes roles as Senior Vice President of the Western Hemisphere Survey Operations and Senior Vice President of Global Business Development. Before his current role, he led ABS divisions in Europe and the Pacific, demonstrating deep operational expertise and leadership across the organization.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering from the Maine Maritime Academy and an MBA from Texas A&M University.

With his extensive experience and dedication to advancing maritime safety and innovation, John McDonald is well-positioned to lead ABS into its next era of growth. His appointment marks a smooth leadership transition, ensuring continuity in ABS’s mission to support the global maritime industry with integrity, technical excellence, and a focus on safety.
