ClassNK has released the “Part A Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 3.0.1)”, providing updated safety interpretations and documentation requirements for methyl and ethyl alcohol-fueled ships. The revised edition aims to enhance clarity and support shipbuilders, designers, and operators as the maritime industry accelerates its transition toward low- and zero-emission vessels.

Strengthening Safety Standards for Alcohol-Fueled Ships

The Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels set out comprehensive safety requirements for ships powered by alternative fuels such as methanol, LPG, ammonia, and hydrogen. The document outlines essential standards for installation, control systems, and safety equipment to reduce risks to ships, seafarers, and the environment.

Edition 3.0.1 of Part A focuses specifically on methyl and ethyl alcohol-fueled ships. It introduces supplementary explanations and clarifies interpretations of key safety requirements based on insights from ClassNK’s design review activities. The update also compiles important information on required plans, documentation, and class survey items for shipbuilders and operators.

Aligning with Global Developments in Alternative Fuels

The revised guidelines reflect ClassNK’s response to the growing adoption of alcohol-fueled ships worldwide. The organization notes that discussions on revising the IMO Interim Guidelines, which form the foundation for Part A, will take place at the 12th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 12) in September 2026. ClassNK intends to closely follow these deliberations and update its guidelines accordingly to remain aligned with international standards.

As part of its “Transition Support Services”, ClassNK continues to assist stakeholders in adopting next-generation fuels by offering technical guidance and safety frameworks. These initiatives aim to ensure a smooth, compliant, and safe transition toward zero-emission shipping.

With the release of Edition 3.0.1, ClassNK reaffirms its leadership in advancing the safe use of alternative fuels. By clarifying safety interpretations and aligning with upcoming IMO developments, the society is helping the maritime industry embrace cleaner energy solutions while maintaining the highest safety and operational standards.
