According to Marine Insight, approximately 50 individuals boarded a cargo barge anchored around three miles off the Bahamas on 13 November, following a mechanical failure of the tugboat towing it.
The barge was left immobile after its tow wire snapped amid severe winds, which caused the towing vessel to become grounded nearby. During this time, looters boarded the barge and began removing cargo, prompting the barge operator to call in both U.S. and Bahamian authorities.
Bahamian police did dispatch a unit, but reportedly declined to board the barge due to concerns that the situation could turn violent. The company emphasised that the safety of its personnel was the top priority amid the unfolding theft.
