A drone attack ignited a Turkish-flagged tanker on Monday in Ukraine’s Odesa region, just a day after Ukraine finalised a new deal to import U.S. liquefied natural gas through that area. Officials reported that the vessel was struck while it was unloading liquefied petroleum gas at a port along the Danube. Thankfully, all 16 crew members managed to evacuate safely, and there were no reported injuries, reports AP News.
Overnight Attacks Damage Energy and Port Facilities
Ukrainian officials confirmed that drones targeted several cities in the Odesa region overnight, causing damage to energy infrastructure and port facilities. Multiple fires erupted, impacting civilian vessels as well. One person sustained injuries during the attacks. This region has been under constant threat since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.
Key Import Route as Winter Approaches
The port that was affected is a crucial hub for Ukraine’s imports and exports. To ensure energy supplies as winter approaches, Ukraine has arranged for U.S. liquefied natural gas to start arriving in Odesa from Greece in January, utilising established pipeline routes.
Romanian Border Villages Evacuated
On the Romanian side of the border, authorities have ordered the evacuation of residents and animals from two villages due to the dangerous nature of the tanker’s cargo and its proximity to the incident.
Russian Strikes Kill Five Across Multiple Regions
In addition to the Odesa region, Russian missile strikes on a northeastern Ukrainian town resulted in the deaths of three people and left 11 others injured, including four girls aged between 12 and 17. In central Ukraine, drone and artillery attacks during the day claimed two lives and injured two more, damaging apartment buildings, shops, and even a hair salon. The United Nations estimates that Russian attacks have led to the deaths of over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians since the war began.
Large-Scale Overnight Barrage Reported
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched two ballistic missiles and 128 strike and decoy drones across the country overnight. Russian officials claimed their air defences intercepted 36 Ukrainian drones as Ukraine continues to target energy facilities.
Drone Strike Damages Power Substation in Russia
A Ukrainian drone attack also damaged a power substation in a western Russian region. Local authorities reported no casualties and said the electricity supply remained stable.
