The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) in East Port Said has inaugurated a massive expansion project that adds 2.2 million TEUs of annual capacity, raising the terminal’s total throughput capability to 7 million TEUs. The $500 million development marks a milestone for Egypt’s maritime infrastructure and reinforces the country’s strategic role in global trade. The ceremony was attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, showcasing the national importance of the project.

Significant Infrastructure Upgrade to Strengthen Global Connectivity

The expansion includes 955 meters of new quay, over half a million square meters of yard space, and a modern fleet of equipment such as 12 quay cranes, 30 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, and more than 90 trucks.
SCCT is one of eight global hub terminals chosen by APM Terminals to support the East-West shipping network of A.P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The enhancement solidifies SCCT’s position as a key node in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, providing world-class operational efficiency and increased capacity for global trade flow.
APM Terminals emphasized its commitment to Egypt and praised the workforce contributing to the terminal’s outstanding performance.

Sustainability and Economic Growth at the Core of the Expansion

A major focus of the project is sustainability. The terminal is deploying electric RTGs, battery-powered container handling equipment, and renewable energy systems to reduce emissions as part of APM Terminals’ 2040 net-zero goal.
Beyond technological advancements, the expansion is generating more than 1,000 new jobs and supporting long-term economic development in the region. The terminal’s efficiency has already earned global recognition Port Said and SCCT ranked third most efficient worldwide and the top in the region in 2024.
The use of advanced digital planning tools, including digital twins, further enhances operational reliability and supports smooth network-wide scheduling.

The expansion of the Suez Canal Container Terminal marks a transformative step for Egypt’s maritime sector. By boosting capacity, integrating sustainable technologies, and creating new employment opportunities, SCCT strengthens Egypt’s position as a regional logistics leader. With strong government support and advanced digital systems, the terminal is set to play an even more critical role in driving global trade efficiency in the years ahead.
