The Manila Times reports that a Filipina master mariner has taken global recognition after being named Seafarer of the Year at the 2025 Crew Connect Global Awards, a distinction granted to individuals who exemplify leadership, professionalism, and meaningful contribution to the maritime community.

Zulaika Florin stood out among five exceptional finalists from around the world. Serving as a master mariner under OSM Thome for one of the industry’s major tanker operators, her career has been consistently marked by resilience and a commitment to operational excellence. Her organization highlighted her as a leader who navigates demanding environments “with grit, grace, and unwavering leadership,” underscoring how she balances fairness onboard with sound decision-making during critical moments.

In a separate interview, Florin reflected on her professional journey, sharing that navigating a career on a chemical tanker remains an uncommon path. She described the challenges of rising through the ranks, noting that the journey required determination, patience, and the steadfast support of family. Her achievement as captain, she said, was once unimaginable, emphasizing the perseverance required to overcome long-standing barriers.

The Crew Connect Global Awards also spotlighted broader industry excellence, recognizing seven additional maritime leaders and organizations for their contributions in training, technology, sustainability, and seafarer wellbeing. These distinctions reflect ongoing advancements across the sector in areas such as maritime safety, environmental innovation, and professional development.

This year’s awardees included:
