A liquefied natural gas tanker tied to a secret fleet that’s helping Russia dodge sanctions is making its way toward the Suez Canal, as reported by Bloomberg. The ship, named Zarya, just finished loading at Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 facility, which is also under U.S. sanctions, and has set sail from the North Atlantic, heading toward North Africa. According to ship-tracking data, Zarya is expected to arrive at Egypt’s Port Said this weekend, right near the entrance to the Suez Canal, a vital route connecting Europe and Asia through the Red Sea, reports FAN.

Red Sea Risks After Houthi Attacks

The global shipping industry is keeping a close eye on whether Zarya will try to pass through the Red Sea, which has become increasingly perilous due to a surge in attacks on commercial vessels by Houthi rebels earlier this year. Following a spike in attacks in early 2024, most LNG carriers have steered clear of the area; the Arctic Mulan was the last Russian LNG ship to navigate south through the Red Sea back in May.

Russian Ships Take Hazardous Routes

Sanctioned Russian vessels are now taking riskier routes to save on travel time and costs. China remains a significant buyer, having received 15 shipments from Arctic LNG 2 since August.

Analyst Outlook

Commenting on the developments, Energy Aspects Ltd. analyst Tom Purdie said:
“The situation in the Red Sea continues to evolve due to ongoing regional conflicts and Houthi efforts to regroup. While a successful passage by Zarya would be encouraging news, it likely won’t lead to an immediate resurgence of LNG traffic through this area.”
