Alfa Laval And Hanwha Ocean Ecotech Partner To Advance Safe Ammonia Fuel Systems For Next-Generation Vessels

9

Alfa Laval Korea Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech to jointly develop safe and reliable ammonia fuel system solutions for dual-fuel vessels. The collaboration supports the maritime industry’s growing shift toward low-carbon and alternative fuels, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to accelerating the adoption of ammonia as a viable marine fuel.

Strategic Collaboration to Accelerate Ammonia Adoption

The new MOU brings together Alfa Laval’s technical leadership in ammonia fuel systems with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech’s strong marine engineering expertise. The partnership aims to develop competitive and future-ready solutions for the emerging ammonia-powered vessel market.

Both companies will work on business co-development, project opportunities, and the delivery of a pilot installation to strengthen future collaboration. Alfa Laval will focus on supplying proven technologies such as its Ammonia Fuel Supply System (FSS) and Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS), while Hanwha will contribute system engineering, integration knowledge, and onboard optimization.

This combined approach aims to improve onboard safety, boost productivity, and secure early market advantages in the rapidly expanding alternative fuel sector.

Expanding R&D and Industry Partnerships to Build a Strong Ammonia Ecosystem

The MOU reflects Alfa Laval’s broader commitment to enabling ammonia-powered shipping through innovation and industry cooperation. Alfa Laval is already working with several key partners to advance ammonia fuel readiness.

A long-term R&D collaboration with WinGD has resulted in successful testing of essential components, including the FCM Ammonia system, ARMS, and Fuel Valve Trains, paving the way for commercial rollout. Another joint project involving K Shipbuilding, WinGD, ABS, and Alfa Laval includes complete fuel system design and an Aalborg ammonia dual-fuel boiler system.

These partnerships demonstrate Alfa Laval’s leadership in building a safe and scalable ammonia fuel infrastructure while supporting global decarbonization efforts.

The partnership between Alfa Laval Korea and Hanwha Ocean Ecotech marks a major step toward advancing ammonia fuel technology for dual-fuel vessels. By combining engineering expertise, proven safety systems, and strong industry collaboration, the two companies aim to accelerate the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner, low-carbon energy. Their joint work and Alfa Laval’s wider ecosystem of partnerships strengthens the foundation for safe, efficient, and commercially viable ammonia-powered shipping in the years ahead.
