In a significant move towards achieving technological independence in the maritime industry, IIT Madras has successfully developed and launched the nation’s very first indigenous Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS). This innovative platform was crafted by the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts at IIT Madras, following the guidelines set by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, reports Maritime Gateway.

Boost to Strategic Autonomy and Data Security

The new VTMS enhances India’s ability to design, operate, and maintain essential port-management technologies without relying on foreign entities. Officials highlighted that this home-grown solution mitigates the risks associated with potential leaks of sensitive vessel movement data.

Deployed at Vizhinjam; More Ports to Follow

The system has already been put into action at the Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited in Kerala, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in May. Talks are currently in progress with two more ports along the western coast for similar implementations.

Full Control Over Code and Infrastructure

One of the standout benefits of the indigenous VTMS is that the government has complete ownership of the software source code, databases, and overall architecture. This guarantees strategic independence and fosters the growth of a skilled national workforce in maritime traffic management.

Scalable, Modular and Cost-Efficient Design

Engineered for security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, the system is designed to seamlessly integrate with emerging technologies and global standards. Murali pointed out that its modular design allows for quick upgrades, minimises operational risks, reduces maintenance costs, and prevents vendor lock-in, facilitating faster innovation and customisation across Indian ports.
