The VOC Port Authority (VOCPA) has taken a major step toward clean and sustainable maritime operations by ordering a fully electric green tug. This initiative supports India’s national efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and shift ports toward environment-friendly technologies. The new tug will be built and maintained by Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd. (KMEW) and will enhance the port’s operational efficiency while reducing its carbon footprint.
Part of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP)
The order falls under India’s Green Tug Transition Programme, which aims to gradually phase out diesel-powered tugs and replace them with electric, hybrid, or alternative-fuel vessels powered by green ammonia or hydrogen.
VOCPA joins other major Indian ports JNPA, Deendayal Port, New Mangalore Port, and Visakhapatnam Port in adopting cleaner tug technologies. Electric tugs are capable of cutting emissions by up to 100%, while hybrid models can reduce emissions by 25–35%, marking a significant move toward greener port operations.
Supporting India’s Climate and Maritime Goals
This initiative aligns closely with India’s climate commitments under the COP26 Panchamrit goals, which include achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, expanding non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW, and reducing carbon intensity by 45% by 2030.
The project also supports the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which promotes modernization and sustainability in port operations through the adoption of green technologies.
VOCPA Chairperson Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit highlighted that the port already operates three diesel tugs, and the new electric tug will further strengthen the port’s commitment to clean and efficient maritime development.
The fully electric tug ordered by VOCPA represents a key milestone in India’s transition to environmentally responsible maritime operations. With the potential to significantly reduce emissions and modernize port activities, this initiative contributes to broader national goals of sustainability and clean energy adoption. By taking this step, VOCPA reinforces its role as a leader in green maritime technology in India.
