Hyundai Motor, HD KSOE and PNU Unite to Advance a New Maritime Fuel-Cell Propulsion System

7

Hyundai Motor Company announced an MoU with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Pusan National University to develop a maritime fuel-cell system. The agreement marks a new phase for Hyundai Motor as it brings its hydrogen technology into the maritime sector. It also reflects a growing shift toward clean propulsion in shipping.

Developing Technology for Hydrogen Carriers

Under the MoU, the three partners will work on a system designed for mid- to large-scale liquefied hydrogen carriers. To begin with, Hyundai Motor will create a marine-ready fuel-cell unit based on its existing hydrogen platform. In parallel, HD KSOE will design a hybrid propulsion setup that combines a hydrogen dual-fuel engine with Hyundai’s fuel-cell system. Meanwhile, PNU will test the integrated system and lead the demonstration stage.

Supporting IMO Carbon Targets Through Innovation

The collaboration aims to help future vessels meet the carbon-reduction goals set by the International Maritime Organization. As a result, the project brings together fuel-cell technology, hybrid propulsion design, and academic research to support more efficient and cleaner ship operations. It also offers a practical pathway for integrating hydrogen systems into marine environments.

Building Experience and Strengthening Market Position

This initiative helps Hyundai Motor enter the maritime hydrogen field with strong partners. By working with an established shipbuilder, the company gains a platform for technical development and mid- to large-scale project experience. In addition, the partnership supports the creation of a broader foundation for fuel-cell systems in shipping and strengthens Hyundai Motor’s role in the wider hydrogen economy.

Aligned With a Long-Term Clean Energy Vision

The project also fits Hyundai Motor’s “Progress for Humanity” direction. Through this cooperation, the company can extend its HTWO hydrogen brand and explore new opportunities with industry groups, governments, and maritime stakeholders. As the partners move forward, the shared goal is to support cleaner, safer, and more sustainable maritime mobility.
