Reuters reports that Turkey raised strong concerns about Black Sea safety after a series of attacks on Russia-linked tankers in recent days. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that the incidents were “very scary” and showed how the conflict in Ukraine continued to spread into regional maritime activity. He added that such strikes threaten navigation, affect commercial flows, and undermine overall maritime security.
Attacks Within Turkey’s Economic Zone Increase Pressure
Fidan noted that the attacks occurred inside Turkey’s exclusive economic zone. As a result, they created direct safety issues for ships operating in the area. Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria—countries that share the Black Sea coastline—are now discussing additional steps to strengthen maritime protection.
Shipping activity has felt the impact as well. Insurance rates for voyages in the region have increased, and one Turkish shipping company paused Russia-related operations due to security concerns. These developments add another layer of risk for operators managing routes through or near the conflict zone.
Discussions with NATO and Regional Partners
During a NATO meeting in Brussels, Fidan discussed the attacks with the alliance’s Secretary General and with his counterparts from Romania and Bulgaria. The talks included concerns about uninterrupted trade flows, safeguarding infrastructure, and keeping sea routes safe. The ministers also stressed adherence to international law as tensions rise.
Multiple Incidents Raise Alarm Across the Region
Ukraine claimed responsibility for one incident involving seaborne drones directed at two empty tankers bound for a Russian port. However, Kyiv denied involvement in another case where a Russian-flagged tanker reported a drone attack off the Turkish coast. In a separate event beyond the Black Sea, a tanker with links to the region was damaged near Senegal, although no group claimed responsibility.
These events have amplified uncertainty for shipowners operating across wider maritime corridors. They also highlight the importance of frequent risk assessments and close monitoring of rapidly shifting conditions.
Calls to Halt Attacks and Maintain Safe Passage
Turkey has warned all parties to stop attacks on commercial vessels. Officials stated that this message applies to every actor involved in the conflict. At the same time, regional governments have emphasized the importance of keeping trade routes open, securing essential maritime infrastructure, and maintaining reliable access to sea lanes.
The situation escalated further after the Russian president warned that Ukraine’s access to the sea could come under threat. He also stated that Russia would step up actions against facilities, vessels, and tankers linked to countries that support Ukraine.
