COSCO SHIPPING (North America) Inc. has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, outlining major achievements in environmental protection, social responsibility, and corporate governance across its operations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Panama. The report shows how sustainability has become a central pillar of the company’s strategy, supporting its role as a leading end-to-end supply chain service provider in North America.
Strong Environmental Performance Across Ports and Operations
In 2024, COSCO SHIPPING North America made sustainability a major operational priority. The company implemented multiple green initiatives, including energy-efficient warehousing, clean-fuel trucking, and vessel speed reduction programs.
Shore power utilization reached 100% in Oakland and over 96% in Los Angeles and Long Beach, significantly reducing vessel emissions at port. Compliance with NOAA’s “Protect Blue Whales & Blue Skies” vessel-speed program exceeded 99%, showcasing the company’s commitment to protecting marine ecosystems.
The company also maintained full compliance with EPA and CARB fuel standards and received several environmental awards such as the Sapphire Award, Green Flag Certificates, Green Wave Award, and Blue Circle Award. Importantly, it reported zero violations under California’s Marine Invasive Species Program, demonstrating strong adherence to environmental regulations.
Advancing Social Responsibility and Strengthening Corporate Governance
COSCO SHIPPING North America continued to prioritize the well-being of its workforce and the communities it serves. The company maintained a zero-incident safety record, strengthened policies related to workplace violence, harassment, and substance use, and further integrated diversity and inclusion into its operations.
Community engagement remained active across the region. Initiatives included career fairs, backpack donations, holiday toy drives in Secaucus, beach cleanups in Panama, and tree-planting events with local partners. During the sustainability report launch, the company contributed 75 gifts to the Secaucus Township holiday toy drive.
On the governance front, the Board of Directors enhanced oversight of compliance, cybersecurity, financial reporting, and sustainability risk. The company reinforced its Code of Conduct, maintained zero-tolerance policies for corruption and bribery, and strengthened cybersecurity systems with ISO 27001-aligned controls such as multi-factor authentication and employee training.
