  • Enova awards NOK 298 million for three ammonia-fueled vessels.
  • Kamsarmax newbuilds target zero-emission deep-sea shipping.
  • Vessels designed for the EU steel industry decarbonisation.

Amon Maritime has just received a significant boost with investment grants totalling NOK 298 million from Enova, aimed at supporting the construction of three new ammonia-fueled bulk carriers. This funding is a big step forward in the company’s mission to enhance zero-emission deep-sea shipping, reports Amon Maritime.

Kamsarmax Vessels with Carbon-Free Fuel

These three vessels will fall into the Kamsarmax category, each boasting a capacity of about 80,000–85,000 DWT. They’re designed to maximise energy efficiency while utilising carbon-free ammonia fuel, solidifying Amon Bulk’s position as a pioneer in ammonia-powered shipping.

Focus on European Steel Industry Demand

The new ships are specifically crafted to cater to European steel producers, who are under increasing pressure to decarbonise their logistics. By providing low-carbon transport options, these vessels are set to meet the changing demands of this vital industrial sector.

Alignment with EU Climate Regulations

These vessels are fully compliant with the EU Emissions Trading System and the FuelEU Maritime regulation. Their design aims to ensure strong commercial performance under future regulations while adhering to the tightening climate targets.

CEO Highlights Industry Milestone

André Risholm, CEO of Amon Maritime, comments: “This grant provides the foundation to move forward with three additional Kamsarmax vessels. It marks a significant milestone for Amon Bulk and for the shipping industry’s green transition.”

Five Vessels Now Supported by Enova

With this latest funding, Amon Bulk has now secured over NOK 552 million from Enova for a total of five ammonia-powered bulk carriers. The first two vessels were announced earlier this year, and now three more have been added to the program.

Delivery Timeline and Long-Term Impact

All five vessels are expected to be delivered between 2029 and 2030. Together, they will represent a new generation of zero-emission bulk carriers, helping to accelerate the transformation of global shipping.
