SOLAS Updates Container Loss Reporting Rules from 2026

  • Masters must report container losses without delay.
  • Drifting container sightings now require mandatory reporting.
  • Standard reporting format added under SOLAS Chapter V.

Starting from January 1, 2026, there will be some important updates to SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 31. These changes are designed to clarify and enhance the reporting requirements when it comes to the loss or sighting of freight containers from ships, reports Brittania P&I.

Mandatory Reporting of Container Losses

With the new regulation in place, it’s the responsibility of the ship’s master, or the company if the master can’t report, to quickly inform nearby vessels and the closest coastal state if any freight container goes missing.

Reporting of Drifting Containers at Sea

Additionally, the amendment brings in a fresh requirement for shipmasters to report any freight containers they see drifting in the ocean. These sightings need to be communicated promptly to nearby ships and the nearest coastal state.

Standardised Reporting Format Introduced

A standardised format for reporting container losses and sightings has been introduced under SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 32. This is aimed at enhancing consistency, clarity, and coordination in responses.

Guidance for Shipowners and Operators

Shipowners are encouraged to take a moment to review and update their onboard procedures and reporting formats to align with these new requirements. They can also refer to supporting tables for guidance to help ensure accurate and timely reporting of any container losses or sightings.
