Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has approved a new leadership structure that will come into effect on 1 April 2026, following a decision by its Board of Directors. The planned changes mark a generational transition aimed at supporting MOL’s long-term strategy and strengthening its position in the evolving global shipping market.

Key Leadership Appointments and Role Changes

Under the new structure, Jotaro Tamura will assume the role of President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Takeshi Hashimoto, who will move to Chairman of the Board after the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders scheduled for 25 June 2026. Tamura currently serves as Senior Managing Executive Officer and brings extensive global experience, particularly in container shipping.

Meanwhile, Junichiro Ikeda, the current Chairman of the Board, will retire as Director at the conclusion of the same meeting and take on the role of Corporate Advisor, ensuring continuity during the transition.

Vice President Appointments and Strategic Direction

MOL also announced new Vice President appointments as part of the leadership reshuffle. Hisashi Umemura will become Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, while Kazuya Hamazaki will continue in his role as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Tamura and Umemura are expected to be appointed Representative Directors following shareholder approval.

According to Hashimoto, the leadership change aligns with MOL’s long-term strategy, BLUE ACTION 2035. While Phase 1 focused on growth investments and portfolio transformation, Phase 2 will prioritize returns, operational strength, and sustainable growth.

The leadership transition reflects a carefully planned succession strategy as MOL prepares for the next phase of its development. With experienced executives stepping into key roles, the company aims to enhance competitiveness, strengthen governance, and drive long-term value in a rapidly changing global shipping environment.
