DHL Global Forwarding And CMA CGM Partner To Cut Carbon Emissions In Container Shipping

13

DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have taken a major step toward decarbonising global container transport by jointly adopting sustainable marine fuel solutions. Through the use of second-generation biofuel, the partnership aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ocean freight while supporting customers in building lower-carbon international supply chains.

Biofuel Adoption to Reduce Ocean Freight Emissions

As part of the agreement, DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM will jointly use 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel. This initiative is expected to enable an estimated reduction of around 25,000 metric tons of CO₂e on a well-to-wake basis for shipments transported under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service.

CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its fleet, while DHL will allocate the resulting emissions reductions to customers using the Book & Claim approach. Through GoGreen Plus, DHL customers can reduce the carbon intensity of their shipments by choosing sustainable marine fuel options, achieving greenhouse gas reductions of up to 80% compared to conventional marine fuels.

Shared Commitment to Net-Zero and Scalable Solutions

The collaboration aligns with both companies’ long-term climate goals. DHL has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, while CMA CGM has already reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping activities by 57% since 2008. Through its ACT+ low-carbon transport offering, CMA CGM provides scalable solutions supported by a fleet designed for alternative and dual-fuel operations.

Both companies emphasised that collaboration is essential to accelerating the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon fuels. By combining DHL’s customer-focused decarbonisation solutions with CMA CGM’s investments in sustainable shipping, the partnership demonstrates how shared responsibility can deliver measurable climate impact.

The partnership between DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM highlights how sustainable marine fuels and innovative emissions-allocation models can drive real progress toward decarbonising global supply chains. By enabling customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions and supporting the wider adoption of alternative fuels, this collaboration represents a meaningful step toward net-zero shipping and a more sustainable future for international logistics.
