The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has released Port Call Standard 2.0, an upgraded version of its earlier Just-in-Time (JIT)/Port Call 1.2 Beta standard. Designed to make port-call planning more practical and easier to implement, the new standard introduces a simplified API structure and enhanced operational data to improve coordination among shipping lines, terminals, ports, and technology providers.
Simplified Structure and Enhanced Operational Data
Port Call Standard 2.0 addresses key challenges identified by users of earlier versions. It streamlines message requirements and introduces forecasted “units to move” and restow information critical data that had previously been missing for effective berth and resource planning.
The updated version closely aligns with DCSA’s API guidelines, offering a more predictable and consistent structure. This significantly reduces integration complexity, allowing organisations to adopt the standard more efficiently within their existing systems while improving data accuracy and reliability across port-call processes.
Improved Coordination, Efficiency, and Environmental Benefits
By enabling easier exchange of timely operational events, Port Call 2.0 helps stakeholders establish a shared and reliable operational view of vessel calls. This improved visibility supports better planning for berthing, pilotage, towage, and landside resources, while reducing manual coordination and uncertainty around arrival times.
Independent studies have shown that better-aligned port calls can lower fuel consumption, reduce emissions, minimise vessel waiting times, and optimise the use of port infrastructure directly contributing to more sustainable and efficient maritime operations.
Port Call Standard 2.0 marks a significant step forward in DCSA’s shift toward practical, industry-driven digital standards. With its simplified design, improved data coverage, and greater flexibility, the updated standard lowers adoption barriers and supports broader alignment across the container shipping ecosystem. Organisations currently using Port Call 1.2 Beta are encouraged to transition to the new version and engage with DCSA to ensure smooth implementation and testing
