- Authorities Decide Against Sanctions Investigation.
- Vessel and Owner Subject to EU and U.S. Sanctions.
- Cargo Details Remain Undisclosed.
Swedish customs has released a Russian ship that they boarded over the weekend for an inspection, and marine tracking data on Monday indicates that the vessel is back in motion, reports Reuters.
Boarding Near Hoganas
The customs service said on Sunday that authorities had boarded a Russian freighter that anchored in Swedish waters near Hoganas in south-west Sweden on Friday after developing engine problems.
No Investigation Into Sanctions Violation
“The prosecutor has decided not to open an investigation into suspected violation of sanctions,” a spokesperson for the customs service said. “The ship has therefore been allowed to go on its way.”
Sanctions Background
The vessel in question is not only on the European Union’s sanctions list, but its owners are also facing U.S. sanctions due to suspected involvement in transporting weapons. This information comes from OpenSanctions, a comprehensive database that tracks sanctioned companies, individuals, persons of interest, and government watchlists.
Cargo Not Disclosed
The customs service has chosen not to disclose what cargo the vessel was carrying when it departed from St. Petersburg on December 15, heading to an undisclosed destination.
Tracking Data Shows Movement
According to LSEG tracking data, the ship has been making its way north along the west coast of Sweden.
