Panama Says Intercepted Tanker Failed to Follow Maritime Rules

Panama has stated that a tanker intercepted by United States authorities did not comply with established maritime regulations while operating near Venezuelan waters.

According to Panamanian officials, the vessel switched off its automatic identification system while departing the area. This action represents a violation of international maritime safety and monitoring requirements.

Authorities confirmed that the failure to maintain active tracking played a role in the interception. The tanker was operating under Panamanian registration at the time of the incident.

Panama’s foreign ministry indicated that the vessel’s conduct is under review. Officials noted that maritime rules require continuous transmission of tracking data to ensure navigational safety and regulatory compliance.

The incident occurred amid heightened enforcement activity targeting oil movements linked to Venezuela. Regional monitoring of tanker operations has increased in response to sanctions-related concerns.

Panama reiterated that vessels registered under its flag must adhere strictly to international maritime conventions. Any deviation from these obligations may trigger administrative or legal action under applicable regulations.
