- Record Number of Greek Vessels Join US Coast Guard Programme.
- Ambassador Calls Amver a Floating Neighbourhood Watch System.
- Greek Ships Honoured for 2025 Rescue Operations.
The US emphasised the significance of its maritime partnership with Greece during an event in Athens, where they acknowledged the contributions of Greece-based shipping companies to the US Coast Guard’s Amver system, which plays a crucial role in coordinating search-and-rescue operations at sea, reports Lloyd’s List.
Record Greek Participation in Amver
The 33rd Amver Awards ceremony, organised by the Piraeus branch of the International Propeller Club, celebrated a remarkable achievement: a record number of vessels from a single nation. Last year, 1,836 ships operated by 193 Greek companies participated in the program.
Ambassador Highlights Role of Shipping
With more than 7,000 ships available to assist at any time, Amver was described as “a floating neighbourhood watch system” by recently installed US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle.
Highlighting that 90% of global trade is transported by sea, Guilfoyle pointed out the ocean’s potential dangers and underscored the humanitarian contributions of Greek shipping. She expressed gratitude to the participating companies on behalf of US President Donald Trump.
Expanding Cooperation With Greece
Since she arrived in Greece last November, Guilfoyle has been vocal about the US’s goal to enhance collaboration with Greece in the areas of shipping and shipbuilding. She was also recently appointed as the honorary president of the Greek chapter of the Propeller Club.
Leading Greek Fleets in Amver
The Angelicoussis Group topped the participation charts last year with 130 vessels, followed closely by TMS Group with 109 ships, Capital Ship Management with 89, Technomar Shipping with 81, and Starbulk with 75.
Rescue Operations Recognised
Costis Frangoulis, president of the Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus, remarked that for Greek mariners, the protection of human life at sea is a timeless principle. The ceremony also honoured 12 rescue operations conducted by Greek vessels through Amver in 2025, which successfully saved 97 lives.
They served as a reminder that “beyond numbers and distances, hope remains the strongest current that connects us,” Frangoulis said.
