GTT Secures Lloyd’s Register Approval For New Three-Tank Very Large Ethane Carrier Design

17

French containment specialist GTT has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification society Lloyd’s Register for a new three-tank Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) design. Developed in collaboration with China Merchants Heavy Industry, Deltamarin and Babcock LGE, the concept responds to growing demand for larger, more efficient vessels capable of transporting ethane and other petrochemical gases while meeting stringent environmental requirements.

Enhanced Cargo Capacity and Operational Efficiency

The new VLEC design maintains the vessel’s main dimensions but increases cargo capacity to up to 103,000 m³ through an optimized three-tank configuration. This layout improves insulation performance and allows the vessel to carry a wide range of cargoes, including ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene and butane, while also featuring LNG-compatible tanks.

Hull-line optimisation enables a design speed of up to 17 knots, while complying with EEDI Phase III standards. These improvements are aimed at increasing delivered cargo volumes, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing the overall cost of ownership for shipowners.

Simplified Design and Collaborative Development

By reducing the number of tanks from four to three, the design simplifies vessel architecture and lowers equipment requirements. This approach supports more efficient construction and reduced operational complexity, contributing to lower lifecycle costs and improved performance.

The project reflects close collaboration between leading maritime and engineering specialists. GTT brings its expertise in cryogenic membrane containment systems, while Lloyd’s Register provides independent technical validation. Partners China Merchants Heavy Industry, Deltamarin and Babcock LGE contribute shipbuilding, naval architecture and cargo handling system expertise, ensuring the design meets both commercial and regulatory expectations.

The Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register marks a significant milestone for GTT’s new VLEC concept, highlighting its potential to set a new benchmark in gas carrier efficiency and versatility. As demand grows for larger and more sustainable petrochemical gas carriers, the three-tank design positions shipowners and shipyards to benefit from improved performance, reduced costs and compliance with evolving environmental standards
