- Milestone container handled in December.
- Capacity expansion and equipment upgrades support growth.
- The Berth 8 project aims to lift handling capacity further.
The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), which serves as the flagship facility for International Container Terminal Services Inc. and stands as the Philippines’ primary gateway for international trade, achieved a remarkable milestone by handling three million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025. This achievement marks the first time the terminal has reached the three-million-TEU mark in a single year, reports ICTSI.
Milestone Vessel Call
On December 22, the terminal welcomed the record-setting container vessel Ever Bliss, operated by Evergreen Marine Corp., which was carrying cargo for Universal Robina Corp.
Management Commentary
MICT chief executive officer Christian Lozano said the achievement highlighted the terminal’s ability to manage rising volumes while maintaining service quality during peak periods. “Handling three million TEUs shows how the MICT has kept pace with rising demand through continued operational improvements and capacity expansion,” he said.
Investments in Equipment and Operations
This surge in throughput aligns with ongoing investments in equipment and infrastructure throughout the year. Notable upgrades included the introduction of hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes, the addition of terminal tractors to enhance throughput, and the initial exploration of electric terminal tractors as part of the terminal’s modernisation efforts.
Berth 8 Expansion Progress
Construction is making great strides on the terminal’s eighth berth, which boasts a 300-meter quay and a combined quay and yard development covering 12 hectares. Currently, 6.5 hectares of this area are already operational. With a depth of 15 meters, Berth 8 will be equipped to handle container vessels with capacities of up to 18,000 TEUs. The delivery of three quay cranes for this berth is anticipated in 2027. Once the expansion is complete, MICT’s annual handling capacity is projected to rise to 3.5 million TEUs.
Outlook for Cargo Handling
“Our priority is to deliver consistent and efficient service to customers and ensure cargo continues to move reliably as volumes grow,” Lozano said. MICT handles around 70% of Manila port volumes and remains the country’s largest and busiest container terminal, serving as a key gateway for international cargo flows to and from the Philippines.
