Japan–US Container Shipments Slide in November as Auto Cargo Weakness Weighs on Volumes

Containerised shipments from Japan to the US totalled 48,675 TEUs in November, based on port-of-origin data, marking an 8.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline, according to Descartes Datamyne.

Volumes were also down 8.7 per cent compared with October. Cumulatively, shipments reached 577,146 TEUs in the January–November period.

Direct Japan–US services accounted for 29,894 TEUs in November, down 19.5 per cent, while 18,781 TEUs were transhipped en route, up 17.2 per cent, lifting the transhipment share to 38.6 per cent.

Of the transhipped volumes, 12,104 TEUs moved via South Korea, up 13.2 per cent, and 4,221 TEUs via China, up 139.4 per cent.

Volumes via Taiwan fell 33.1 per cent to 1,547 TEUs, while shipments routed through Singapore declined 54.7 per cent to 380 TEUs.

Among direct shipments, Tokyo handled 10,596 TEUs, down 29.8 per cent, followed by Nagoya with 8,938 TEUs, down 20.4 per cent, and Kobe with 5,969 TEUs, down 21.2 per cent.

Yokohama recorded a 59.1 per cent increase to 3,481 TEUs, while Osaka rose 47.1 per cent to 353 TEUs.

The declines at Tokyo and Nagoya were attributed to reduced auto-related cargo.

By commodity, machinery and mechanical appliances (HS 84) slipped 2.3 per cent to 12,470 TEUs, while vehicles and automotive parts (HS 87) fell 20.4 per cent to 9,355 TEUs.

Rubber and rubber products (HS 40) rose 21.9 per cent to 6,641 TEUs, plastics (HS 39) declined 8.5 per cent to 4,621 TEUs, and electrical machinery and equipment (HS 85) dropped 17.1 per cent to 2,544 TEUs.

In November, US container imports fell 5.4 per cent month-on-month (MoM) and 7.8 per cent YoY in November, according to Descartes Systems Group, with seaports handling 2.18 million TEUs.
