On Aug 1, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained three vessels in Pengerang waters, southeast tip of mainland Malaysia.
- Bunkering tanker MT Maju 8 was detained for failing to furnish the ship’s insurance during inspection in the waters off Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.
- Pipe-laying vessel MT Global 1201 and a tanker MT Sentek 26 were detained on suspicion of unauthorized fuel ship-to-ship STS fuel transfer in Malaysian waters.
7th Maritime District enforcement chief, Capt Amran Daud reportedly said that the tanker MT Maju 8 with 10 Indonesians crew of the ship were detained while its captain and chief engineer were taken to Tanjung Sedili MMEA office for further investigation.
The crew aged between 30 and in their 50s, were investigated under the Merchant Shipping Act (Amendment and Extension) 2011 which provided a maximum fine of RM500,000 if found guilty.
The other two vessels, namely, MT Sentek 26 and MT Global 1201, had a crew of 101 comprising of Indonesians, Filipinos and Singaporeans, aged 20 to their 60s.
When detained, MT Sentek was allegedly transferring Low Sulfur Gas Oil (LSGO) to MT Global. The case is investigated under Section 49 1B(1)(k) and Section 49 1B(1)(I) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
“If found guilty, they can be fined not exceeding RM100,000 or jail two years or both,” he added.
