On August 4, a worker was rescued after he fell nearly 15 feet down a hole on a massive U.S. Navy ship on a dry dock in San Francisco, officials said.

Firefighters were called after worker fell into the circular hole around 3:30 p.m. on the U.S. Navy Ship Guadalupe, an oiler that is parked on a private pier near 20th and 3rd streets in the city’s Dogpatch neighborhood, said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, a San Francisco Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters did not know how the man fell into the confined space, described as a narrow, vertical hole between 10 and 15-feet deep.  Baxter did not know what the space was used for.

Firefighters used harness  ropes to hoist the man out of the hole around 4:30 p.m.  The worker was responsive and had moderate injuries, Baxter said.

The Guadalupe is a 677-foot replenishment oiler used for carrying large amounts of fuel to support Navy operations on the open sea far from port.  It has been in service since 1992.
