More than 12,000 seafarers have been trained by the hands of trained officers and faculty members from National Maritime Polytechnic in Region 08.  This report was obtained based on the data obtained from NMP in 2015.

Attorney Ruben Maceda, NMP Officer-in-Charge in a press conference held on Wednesday stated “All these numbers have boarded foreign and domestic vessels and are now leading productive lives”.  Furthermore, he expressed that Filipino seafarers have been employed all over the world aboard luxury, cargo and passenger vessels.

Maritime Week celebrations are in full swing at the NMP campus located near the San Juanico Bridge.  Keeping up with the theme of celebration “Shipping is indispensable to the world” Maceda stated that “About 90% of our needed goods, foods, textiles and what have you, are transported by ships”.  NMP updated the media of all their plans to develop and train more seamen by providing them with necessary skills and competency to be on par with their foreign counterparts.

Jesus Laguitan, Head training officer, NMP has expressed that NMP is fortunate enough to be identified as a training centre Japan’s International Marine Management Association of Japan (IMMAJ) for seafarer instructors to conduct training and to impart valuable skill to the students of NMP.  All the required support and equipment for the entire duration of training will be provided for free by IMMAJ.

The IMMAJ is planning to mentor 40 trainers on 6.10 courses or using a ship simulator already present in its NMP buildings.  Few of the media people were invited to view the simulator and experience the feeling of a moving vessel and awaiting anchor in one of the ports of Japan.  When posed with a question of why Japan chose NMP for providing high-end training Captain Laguitan stated that Japan values the character of every Filipino seaman and their reliability. In Region 08 NMP has so far trained 7,360 seafarers from Leyte; 1,917 from Southern Leyte; 1,002 from Biliran; 645 from Eastern Samar and 547 from Northern Samar.
